Hi Everyone,
A new college year is here and I wish to welcome all our new students who have joined us. It was great to meet so many of you at our open days in September.
If you have just joined us then I would strongly suggest that you use all the student support that is available to you. This website for example which lets you know about fashion related exhibitions, books, websites and even trends. And check out the student gallery which with give you lots of interesting and inspirational ideas. You can chat with other students on our student bulletin board. Use you tutor also, weather you are learning in the classroom or at home, your tutor has valuable industry training and experience which you can tap into. Feel free to contact myself or your allocated tutor at any time for any advice or help you may need.
Our annual graduation was held on October 11th at the Hilton Hotel here in Dublin. It was fantastic to see so many students graduating from our Fashion, Interior Design and Garden Design courses, with their families and friends all there to join in the celebration and watch them receive their hard earned awards. In the coming weeks we will adding some photos from the graduation day, along with updates on the exciting ventures that some of these graduates have been involved in since completing their respective courses.
With the long winter nights ahead, you can always get your fashion fix by a trip to the movies as there is no shortage of fashion inspiring trends on the big screen over the coming months. Film is always a great source of inspiration for fashion designers and stylists alike. From Funny face to The Devil Wears Prada many a trend has begun its life on a movie reel.
The bright young things of 1920’s upper class London are brought to the screen in a new version of Evelyn Waugh’s Bridehead’s Revisited which hit the screens last month. Find yourself seduced by sharp bobs and curls, extra long scarves, three piece suits and flapper drop waisted silk dresses. If this doesn’t send you running to your closest vintage store so you can stock up on dress hats and gloves, embroidered scarves and long beaded necklaces then the upcoming period thriller Changeling will. Set in 1920’s Los Angeles, with beautiful clouche hats and fur-trimmed coats, will inspire many a winter wardrobe.
One of the biggest movie releases of December is Baz Luhrmann’s Australia. Luhrmanns last outing Moulin Rouge inspired many a fashion collection and editorial shoot and this towering epic with a shoe wardrobe designed by Slavatore Ferragamo will doubtlessly be equally influential. Set in the period leading up to and during World War Two expect to see 1930’s and early 40’s silhouettes combined with a little outback chic.
On the small screen, two new TV show’s will keep you in the fashion loop. Channel 4’s Frock me is a celebration of fashion and music, looking at the hottest current trends from its roots to your wardrobe. The show also hosts regular interviews with some of fashions major icons. BBC’s series British Style Genius takes an interesting look at what inspires British fashion and makes it so influential and distinctive. Fascinating stuff to inspire all you budding stylists.
Happy viewing!
