Recession Design
Yes we’ve all heard of recession chic, and we know that we now have less money to spend on our wardrobes .We’ve heard that we must try to revive, re-use, recycle our clothes, swap with friends, over-dye old jeans, embellish tops, change buttons on jackets, add a new belt to a dress etc to give garments a new lease of life, shop in markets and designer outlets etc. However what’s interesting now is that we are actually seeing a new recession style and silhouette emerging at the top end designer collections on the catwalk. In the 1940`s fashion was restricted by the war and clothing rationing, and to a certain extent we are seeing this again. Silhouettes will become leaner and straighter (to use less yardage), one shoulder pieces have been seen everywhere from Westwood, Kors, Costume National and Givenchy, colours will become more classic and neutral (so they wont date) and hemlines will get shorter with shorts and crops being more common than full length trouser. The high waisted wide leg trousers with turn-ups that we saw past summer will be a thing of the past – using as much fabric as they do. Watch out for money-saving details such as faux pockets, narrower lapels, unlined or half lined jackets, cheaper cloth such as cotton and polycotton and an overall leaner silhouette. Try to ignore the dismal colours (colour wont be too affected by the recession), just look at the cut and silhouettes.
