Rockabilly Hairstyles

The Rockabilly trend was forecast for S/S 09 but we haven’t really seen it hit the mainstream. The hairstyles however have been creeping up on us for some time! Rockabilly is a mixture of “Hillbilly (country swing music) and Rock”. It originated in the 50`s and there is still a large Rockabilly sub-culture that exists today. Prom dresses and tattoos, 50`s housewife meets rock diva. The style is very feminine and enhances an hourglass figure with lots of red and black, cherries and polka dot motifs. Some men have been sporting this style for decades (think Charlie sheen and Michael Madsen-big quiffs and bowling shirts), but we rarely see the female pin curls done properly. The hair is meticulously manicured and sculpted into curls and “tube” bangs. Betty Paige was the original pin-up girl and you can certainly see where Dita von Tease gets her inspiration. VV brown and Imelda May are the upcoming Rockabilly starlets this side of the water and even Amy Winehouse was an instigator of this style with her sailor tattoos….

Recession Design

Yes we’ve all heard of recession chic, and we know that we now have less money to spend on our wardrobes .We’ve heard that we must try to revive, re-use, recycle our clothes, swap with friends, over-dye old jeans, embellish tops, change buttons on jackets, add a new belt to a dress etc to give garments a new lease of life, shop in markets and designer outlets etc. However what’s interesting now is that we are actually seeing a new recession style and silhouette emerging at the top end designer collections on the catwalk. In the 1940`s fashion was restricted by the war and clothing rationing, and to a certain extent we are seeing this again. Silhouettes will become leaner and straighter (to use less yardage), one shoulder pieces have been seen everywhere from Westwood, Kors, Costume National and Givenchy, colours will become more classic and neutral (so they wont date) and hemlines will get shorter with shorts and crops being more common than full length trouser. The high waisted wide leg trousers with turn-ups that we saw past summer will be a thing of the past – using as much fabric as they do. Watch out for money-saving details such as faux pockets, narrower lapels, unlined or half lined jackets, cheaper cloth such as cotton and polycotton and an overall leaner silhouette. Try to ignore the dismal colours (colour wont be too affected by the recession), just look at the cut and silhouettes.
