Title of Event: Fashion V Sport

With Olympic fever behind us the V&A continues the sporting theme with an exhibition that looks at the relationship that exists between fashion and global sportswear brands. Exploring the many recent collaborations that have come about between the two industries.. On display will be approx 60 outfits including work by designers who have created sportswear ranges such as  Stella McCartney for Adidas, and also examples of work which will demonstrate the influence of Sportswear on high fashion including garments by Japanese label Visvim and Bernard Wilhelm .The exhibit also has examples of film, drawings and photographs to examine how these products are created, worn and advertised including a look at mainstream campaigns for high fashion brands which feature Sports personalities, most famously David Beckham for Emporio Armani.
Fashion V Sport also includes examples customised sportswear by fashion designers, and takes a look at sportswear obsessive, including one collector who owns hundreds of pairs of trainers. Exhibition admission: £5

Title of Event: Dresses from History

Displaying dresses and ensembles from the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods, this display entitled Dresses from History shows a carefully chosen selection of dresses from the museums collection. Specialist textile conservators have prepared the dresses for the exhibition using different conservation treatments for the different dresses. All the height of fashion at the time, the chosen dresses displays highly decorative qualities. One of the most ornate been a glittering court dress of French brocaded silk with gold thread in a floral print dating from around 1760.The most lavish of clothing was worn to functions at court and this is a wonderful example of this splendid opulence. The display also includes two special exhibits which give the Victorian and Regency dresses a Royal historical context. A black silk dress worn by Queen Victoria in the 1890’s towards the end of her reign is included, black emphasising how the Queen mourned the death of her husband Prince Albert from his death in 1861 until her death in 1901.

Viktor and Rolf have long been known for their quirky style and risk-taking design genius that stands out from most of today’s top design houses. Their love of theatrics and stage sets on their own catwalks are highlighted each season with strong and obvious themed collections. This exhibit is a weird and wonderful view of their work and inspiration in the form of an oversized dolls house which visitors can walk around in and feel that they are doll sized themselves. An array of Victorian (and somewhat disturbing dolls) model their masterpieces and there are many workshops and talks ongoing throughout the exhibit. Don’t miss the Viktor and Rolf shop with specialised pieces such as perfume, scarves and illustrated books to purchase. Tickets £8.00

Tim Walker is one of today’s most creative and talented fashion photographers and is known for his fantasy and fairy-tale themes with stunning sets and exotic locations. This wonderful exhibition overviews his work to date and gives us a glimpse into his portfolio. The exhibit also explores the design process behind the scenes and looks at a re-created larger than life photography studio which will place the visitors behind the camera and into the world of the fashion photographer. Tim’s work regularly appears in Vogue W and Harpers Bazaar.

There are a number of “craft and stitching” events coming up over the next few months. Although this type of exhibit may be more to your granny’s taste-it is a good idea to visit with an open mind. Knitting and stitching is seen as an art form in itself and there is an array of beautiful techniques and skills on display. Accessories, garments and household items and well as wall hangings and soft furnishings will give you ideas on customisation and you might even feel inspired to sign up for some workshops. Great for inspiration!

Title of the Event: The William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery
Venue: Victoria and Albert Museum

This beautiful collection of jewellery exhibits 3,500 jewels from the V and A`s jewellery collection. It looks mainly at European jewellery from the past 800 years at the splendour of the ornamentation of the courts. Historic gems include jewels and pendants given by Queen Elizabeth I to her courtiers and the diamonds of Catherine the Great of Russia. Other features of the collection include pieces from the French art Nouveau movement, and pieces form Cartier and Tiffany. There is also contemporary work on view from over 140 living craftsmen and women.


Title of the Event: The Footwear Collection
Venue: Northampton Museum and Art Gallery

This unique collection houses footwear that dates from the ancient Egyptians and Romans through to present day! There are also footwear accessories such shoehorns, shoelaces, shoemaking tools, window displays and trade catalogues and photographs. The history of the shoe obviously runs side by side with the history of costume but is in itself a fascinating industry. The collection consists of more than 12,000 items which also includes fine art representations of shoes and footwear. A fantastic opportunity to let your shoes fetishes roam free!

An exhibition of this contemporary designers work is on show until mid October. Her extravagant designs are created for theatre, boutiques and individual clients. This exhibition showcases her latest designs. Free admission.

This exciting and historic exhibit looks at the trends associated with swimming-the swimming cap in all its glory! From the Victorian beach, to the floral caps of the sixties to the technological advances of today’s Olympic styles. Free admission.

A chance to see the spectacular costumes worn by Diana Ross and the Supremes at the height of their careers. These glamorous girls were one of the biggest girlbands of the 60`s and this is a rare opportunity to see the influence of their style and glitter – even on today’s performers such as Beyonce.

The exhibition consists of garments, photographs, film, TV appearances, album and promotional images and magazine publications; and strives to highlight the positive effect the band had on changing global perceptions during the American Civil Rights Movement. (Girl-power!)

Title of Event: Gothic: Dark Glamour

Echoing one of the biggest trends this season, FIT bring us an exhibition devoted to the gothic style in fashion. Displaying more then 75 ensembles from a wealth of designers including Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Rodarte and Hussein Chalayan, this work shows how a look mainly identified with teenagers clad in black has become a major theme in high fashion. This exhibition traces the development the gothic look from its beginnings in 18th Century gothic literature to what we identify gothic as in contemporary fashion, art and film.  The gallery space which has been designed as a labyrinth with iconic gothic settings also has on display from designers such as Kambriel and Plastic Wrap a range of subcultural styles such as Victorian style goth, steam punk, and cyber goth. A range of public programmes will accompany this exhibition including a Tim Burton film series, and gallery readings of gothic classics. Exhibition admission is free.

Title of the Event: Superheroes : Fashion and Fantasy

For all you wannabe catwomen out there-this is a full on fantasy exhibition of cult movie costumes in all their spandexed glory. The exhibit of aprox 60 pieces includes garments from haute couture to high performance sportswear.

The theme is “how to reveal the superhero in you” and shows how clothes can transform the wearer and the perception of the wearer by the onlooker. Designer’s work includes Armani (who is endorsing the exhibition); McQueen; D & G; Versace; Gautier and includes celebrity co-chairs such as George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

The last time the MET housed a large fashion exhibit on Poiret it launched a big trend towards everything 20`s and Art Deco (due into stores this S/S) so another big fashion event such as this one will definitely influence designers and fashion brands for A/W 2008! Aprox 150 objects are exhibited and rotated in this permanent exhibit that is the only one of its kind in the States .Annette Green has been one of the key people in the world of fragrance since the 1960`s and today is one of the U.S. `s leading authority on perfume and scent. Her collection comprises of over 2000 pieces which include perfume bottles, written historical notes and sketches from the 1800s to today.

This is a brand new museum, opened in June 2007 housing a collection of iconic dresses and gowns once worn by stars such as Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, and Jean Simmons. Newbridge are a well established Irish silverware design emporium and have recently focused their marketing at their jewellery collection. They have used iconic fashionistas such as Miss World: Rosanna Davidson and Yasmin Le Bon to be the faces of Newbridge Jewellery in the past couple of years. There is a new addition to the collection of the pink cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys in 1961, as well as more modern gowns worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Barbara Streisand.

`The way we wore`. This exhibition displays a historic collection of Irish clothing and jewellery from the past 250 years. Many of us think of Irish clothing as home-made aran jumpers and head scarves; however this exhibition shows that the majority of Irish people from 1760-1960 dressed in styles which competed with the fashion conscious Europeans of their time.
