The exhibition features a collection of over 75 classic chairs from the Design Museum collection, each of which illustrates a landmark in aesthetics, functionality, materials, production technology or sustainability. From Michael Thonet’s discovery of how to mass manufacture bentwood chairs in the late 19th Century and Marcel Breuer’s pioneering use of tubular steel at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, to Charles and Ray Eames’ plywood innovations in the 1940s, the pop inspired plastic chairs of Verner Panton and Joe Colombo in the 1960s and recent advances by contemporary designers, such as Jasper Morrison and the Bouroullec brothers, the chair has long been a focus of experimentation for modern designers.

Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern.
This exhibition will draw on MoDA’s own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles from the 1950s.  Examples on display will include work by well-known artists and designers like Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag.
