Spanning six floors, The Lighthouse provides an unrivalled opportunity to experience Architecture and Design through a changing programme of exhibitions, education and life long learning, networking, events and initiatives.  The Lighthouse also contains the Mackintosh Centre and Mackintosh Tower with stunning city views, Vitra Conference Suite, The Lighthouse Shop and the doocot, our stylish rooftop café/bar.

Thanks to the support of The Scottish Government every Saturday entrance is free. This means even more of you can now see the wide-ranging exhibitions and enjoy the programme of weekend events. Everyone is welcome and there's lots to do and see:

The website www.artsandcraftsmuseum.org.uk  has been developed to provide access to the nationally-important Arts & Crafts Movement collections.  The subject of the site is the Arts and Crafts Movement, one of Britain’s most inspiring and influential art movements, spanning the 1880s to about 1940. The Arts & Crafts collections at Cheltenham attract visitors from Britain and abroad. Furniture, silver, metalwork, plasterwork, leatherwork, textiles by William Morris and the next generation of designers such as C R Ashbee, C F A Voysey, M H Baillie Scott and Ernest Gimson give a national overview. The breadth of the collections and the needs of our international audience ranging from historical specialists to complete beginners make a website a particularly effective tool for access.  The site is a visual treat and has been planned to be as interactive as possible with real opportunities for users to follow their personal interests through the pages. There are sections on techniques, style, and the Arts & Crafts today as well as a taster of the extensive archives, drawings and designs not normally on view. Artyfacts is geared towards schools and students and includes images that can be downloaded. The site provides a reading list, details of events and exhibitions, places to visit, and listings of contemporary makers and dealers. It can also function as an information exchange point.  This project has been supported by the Designation Challenge Fund funded by MLA, the Council for Museums, Libraries and Archives.

The Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) houses one of the most important and comprehensive collections of late nineteenth century and twentieth century decorative design for the home. The collections include wallpaper and textile samples, journals and magazines, trade catalogues, advice manuals and original hand-drawn designs. Collectively they throw light on what homes were like and how people lived in them, and are fascinating resource for the general public, students, academics and design professionals.

The Geffrye Museum's main displays are comprised of a chronological sequence of period rooms which show English urban middle-class interiors from 1600-2000. This contextual presentation enables the museum to interpret its collections of decorative and fine arts within a social historical framework, exploring home life and style – and the way urbanites lived – over four centuries.   The museum is set in Grade 1 listed 18th century almshouse buildings with a contemporary extension and is surrounded by attractive gardens, including an award-winning walled herb garden and a series of period gardens.

This year’s residents have been chosen for their experimental approach to design and have been invited to create installations responding to the theme of collections and the notion of collecting.

Web: The exhibition will feature a full range of objects from textiles and fashion to industrial pieces, furniture and prints. It will include design classics such as chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, as well as work by a spectrum of designers that together will evoke an impacting impression of their era. Key exhibits will include work by William Morris, Christopher Dresser, Adolf Loos, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray, Achille Castiglioni, Issey Miyake, Zaha Hadid and Ron Arad.

The aim of the exhibition is to present a decidedly contemporary view of Le Corbusier's work by incorporating the results of recent scholarly research, while also providing a comprehensive introduction to the subject for younger generations, who already regard his oeuvre primarily within the context of twentieth-century cultural history.

Furiture: The collenction at the Victoria and Albert Museum consists of more than 14,000 pieces from Britain, Europe and America, dating from the Middle Ages to the present
day. It is predominantly of furniture but also includes related objects such as architectural
and decorative woodwork, musical instruments, leatherwork, treen and clocks. The collection
also includes complete rooms, some of which are on display in the British Galleries.
Architecture: The V&A has been showing architecture since its foundation and its collection ranges from drawings and photographs to whole rooms. Now the V&A is collaborating with the Royal Institute of British Architects, to bring the RIBA's extraordinary collection of drawings, manuscripts and models to the V&A.
Textiles: The national collection of Textiles covers a period of more than 2000 years. It has a broad geographic range with a particular emphasis on Europe. Most techniques are represented, including woven, printed and embroidered textiles, lace, tapestries and carpets. These are classified by technique, countries of origin and dates of production. Particularly rich areas of the collections are the early silks from the Near East, lace, European tapestries and English medieval church embroidery.
