Winner of the interior designer of the year competition 2006

My name is Yvonne Hutchinson Smyth.

I have always had a keen interest in art and design and when I left school I studied animation for a couple of years.

I had always been looking up local college courses for an Interior Design course and when finally one came to W.I.T., I jumped at the chance to study this by night, as it has always been my passion. I graduated from Limperts Academy with a first class distinction, which was such an achievement to me personally.

From here I set up my company, which I named “Designer Instinct”. I have found it tough enough to get off the ground but am gradually branching out and getting busier everyday.

When I received a letter to take part in the Our House Competition, I had no hesitation and got to work straight away. I was delighted when I qualified as one of the seven finalists.

The room allocated to me was the kitchen, which was sponsored by IKEA in Cardiff.

I decided to use clean lines with subtle tones. My kitchen consisted of off-white units in a veneer with a solid oak worktop. I also in-corporated this oak in the wall units and the kitchen table. I chose an Italian sienna marble tile for the floor and had the same tile cut to create the backsplash for the walls. I then dressed the room with hints of lime green, which for me brought the room together and added a touch of class. I tried to make the room appeal to all ages and judging by the response it worked as it was voted the best room and I was voted the Limperts Academy Interior Designer of the Year 2006 which for me topped off a fantastic few weeks of joy, hard work and even tears at times but I would certainly recommend this experience to anyone who has a sincere passion for interior design.
