Congratulations to our fashion tutor Petula who was one of only 5 exhibitors selected to showcase their work in Dublin’s first Eco Fashion Week. The brief was to re-use, re-cycle and re-make clothing from Oxfam to create a wearable garment.
She designed a feminine and flirty day dress out of re-used men’s shirts. Using delicate cotton twill in a variety of shirting designs and colours; and utilizing the main design details of an actual tailored shirt (cuff details / pleats / buttonholing etc), she created a beautifully made and unique yet wearable eco-friendly design.
Even the colouration was ethical as she used eco-dying techniques including herbs and flower dyes for an all-natural, organic and eco friendly manufacturing process.
Other designs included an evening gown made from strips of knitted shower curtains, a men’s bolero jacket made from an old puffa coat and an embroidered and appliquéd 80`s sweater-dress.
There was also an ethical fashion debate led by political fashion designer Katherine Hamnett. Read a summary of what was said at this debate in the “ask the experts” section, titled “eco fashion”. The information and statistics discussed on the night were a scary reminder of the huge effect fashion has both on the environment and the workers that make the clothes. It makes you ashamed to work in such an industry…..
Towards the end of May most of the design colleges will be putting on their end of year catwalk and static shows. Every year I nag you all to go to these. They truly are a treasure trove where stylists are concerned. Cutting edge up-to the minute fashion, designed by the young hopeful (and broke) designers of today-who will do anything to get their garments in the press / in a photoshoot etc. So this is your perfect opportunity to create partnerships and merge with like-minded creative’s. Perfect for sourcing exciting garments for test shoots and portfolio shots.
Again this month I have concentrated on the “ask the experts” section of the website. We have new interviews from a leading window display artist, a stylist and fashion entrepreneur and notes from an eco fashion debate ….lots of interesting information to give you views and tips and an insight into what different jobs entail. Vital “insider info” that may influence some of your career decisions!
